U.S. 35 reopens after tanker overturns

Route 35 at Miller-Williams Road west of Eaton has reopened after an early-morning crash shut the road down for several hours.

The road was closed for several hours following the crash after it happened around 1 a.m.

Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said the tanker, driven by Russell E. Nesbitt, 54, of Indianapolis,  was travelling westbound on U.S. 35 when it went over railroad tracks and then went off the right side of the road. The load shifted, and the truck went into a ditch.  The tanker was carrying 24 tons, or 48,000 pounds of coal tar. About 50 gallons leaked out, according to OSP.

The Environmental Protection Agency responded to the scene, and the hazardous material was contained by the Eaton Fire Department.

A second tanker was brought in to haul the remaining coal tar away.

It's believed that the semi had just left AK Steel in Middletown before the crash, OSP said. The truck driver told troopers that he swerved to avoid hitting a deer.

The driver was not injured.

Car crashes into house in Dayton

A woman was injured Monday night when a truck forced her off the street and into a house on South Smithville Road.

Dayton police Sgt. Eric Sheldon said officers are searching for the driver of the truck who fled the accident on foot.

An initial investigation indicates that the truck was turning from Reading Road onto South Smithville at about 10:40 p.m. when it collided with a northbound car driven by the woman.

Her vehicle left the roadway and smashed into the front porch of the house, causing minor damage to the porch. The elderly female driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Miami Valley Hospital as a precaution.

Police were told that the male driver of the truck fled west through a car wash parking lot. Officers were still searching for him at 11:30 p.m.

“It’s possible it’s the registered owner of the vehicle so we are checking out that as well,” Sheldon said. Police were headed to the address listed on the vehicle’s registration to see if the man had run home.

Trash fire in Jefferson Twp. gets out of control

A trash fire Monday evening in Jefferson Twp. that got out of control prompted a call to firefighters to put it out.

Fire crews dispatched to 263 Maeder Ave. found flames 25 feet in the air in a lot where there was a demolished house, township Firefighter Don Welch said. Whoever started the fire was trying to eliminate waste, he said.

The large amount of trash, which seemed to be from an old garage, was mostly of the Class A fire class of materials, said Welch. According to Wikipedia, Class A fire class is an “ordinary combustible” and “when a solid, organic material such as wood, cloth, rubber or some plastics become heated to their ignition point.”

The materials likely will leave smoke and steam in the air for the rest of evening, said Welch, and hopefully will not ignite again.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, but Welch said, “Leave bulk clean up to bulk pickup and leave fire alone.”

Unseasonably warm days hit Miami Valley

Unseasonably warm weather is expected to  stick around in the Miami Valley through Thursday, followed by a chance of snow to start the weekend.

Tuesday’s high temperature will reach the upper 40s, while the high Wednesday is expected to be 50 -- 55 on Thursday.

The average high temperature for this time of year is about 40, while the average low is 24.

Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson said this week’s temperatures are above normal, but not record-breaking.

Record highs for this week are all above the 60-degree mark.

“We’ve really entered the time of year where we get the big changes” because air masses to the south are warming up, but there is still very cold air coming down from Canada, Simpson said.

Winds of 20 mph to 30 mph are expected Tuesday, but the wind will be coming from the south.

It will be mostly cloudy and breezy this week with rain off and on Tuesday and brief showers expected Wednesday. Steady rain will arrive late Thursday.

Friday, temperatures are expected to drop from the upper 30s in the morning to the lower 30s by day’s end.  This drop will cause rain to mix with and change over to snow during the day.

“Snow may be coating the ground Saturday,” Simpson said.

Shotgun wielding dad lands in Clark County Jail

A dad who police said had a sawed-off shotgun in hand while holding his 1-year-old son on his hip when he confronted a suspected thief is expected to be court today in answer to criminal charges.

Police said Michael Chaney, 28, pointed a 12-gauge, pump-action shotgun at a man he had accused of stealing a car stereo. The man at whom Chaney pointed the weapon Sunday morning was working on a car, a witness told News Center 7 reporter Jessica Heffner on Monday.

The witness, a neighbor of Chaney who asked that he not be identified by name because he feared retribution, said the confrontation on Wayne Street prompted him to call police.

No shots were fired, Springfield police said, and Chaney denied pointing the gun at the other man.

But, police said they found that the barrel of Chaney’s weapon was shorter than allowed by law. Police also said they found a large knife and container of marijuana in the home where Chaney's 1-year-old son could reach it.

“Yeah, that’s terrible,” said another neighbor, Mark Redman. “You got a lot of stuff going on in the neighborhood that’s ridiculous.” Redman said from the looks of it, what happened was a confrontation that got out of hand.

Chaney is charged with felony counts of unlawful weapon possession and child endangering as well as misdemeanor drug possession.

Ohio gas prices rise again, may continue to climb

Gasoline prices are up more than a dime from last week at Ohio pumps.

The state's average price for regular gas was $3.45 in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and Wright Express. That's up 12 cents from the average of $3.33 per gallon a week ago.

Drivers were paying an average of about $3.10 at this time last year, before prices climbed to record highs. Some analysts believe gas prices may hit new highs in the next few months.

Oil prices have climbed to their highest level this year amid expectations that supplies will tighten in the spring. There's concern that the international dispute over Iran's nuclear program could slow oil supplies from the Middle East.

Vandals slash tires, bust up windows in Riverside

Police are searching for the person or persons responsible for slashing tires on 13 vehicles in one night.

Monday morning, Riverside police received complaints from several residents who woke up to find their vehicles had been vandalized.
Multiple vehicles on Atwood Place and on Lynnhaven and Longview avenues were targeted. Complaints also included broken vehicle windows, police said.

Sgt. David Krigler said vandalism in Riverside is almost never “this extensive.” The acts were thought to have all occurred within an hour.

A single felony offense stemming from the incidents may be possible, he said.  No arrests have been made.

Jason Brodnick, a resident of Atwood, was among those whose tires were slashed. In the past, he said, his car has been egged and offensive messages have been scrawled on its side.

“It just seems to be a fact of life of Atwood,” he said. “There seem to be some very childish individuals.”

Police ask anyone who has information about the vandalism to call the police department at (937) 233-2080.
